The Museum of East Asian Art opened in April 1993 Based in a restored Georgian building, this unique Museum houses an extensive collection of  Chinese. Japanese  Korean  and  Southeast Asian artifacts. collected over the past 35 years by the Museums founder Brian McElney.

The objects on display range in date from c.5000 BC to the twentieth century. and vividly illustrate the fine achievements of East Asian artists and craftsmen. The collection displays at any one time over 5(10 art treasures  in  live galleries.  The Museum has a particularly fine collection of over 200 Chinese jades. and there are more than 500 Chinese and East Asian ceramics. The metalware collection includes artworks of gold. silver., bronze. cloisonne and enamel. A  lively.  innovative  approach  is  taken  to  the presentation of the Museum's collection. with emphasis being placed on education and entertainment.

An introduction video (available in six languages). gallery guides and children’s quizzes are available to help visitors enjoy the collection. The Museum also offers an audio tape and handling collection for the visually impaired. Exhibitions are supported by an active quarterly events program including   tours. lectures, object identification clinics. storytelling and  workshops. Events calendars are available from the Museum Shop and details of these activities arc given in a regular mailshot.
